Designed between 1915 – 1917 and set against the dramatic backdrop of the northern Santa Cruz mountains in Woodside, California, Filoli is an excellent example of the Golden Age of American garden design and country house architecture. Opened to the public in 1976 as a site of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Filoli features a 54,000 sq. ft. home and a 16–acre English Renaissance Garden. In addition, Filoli’s property includes a 6.8 acre Gentlemen’s Heritage Orchard and a trail system that transverses five different ecosystems for docent–guided nature hikes and visits to the Sally MacBride Nature Center.
Filoli is recognized as one of the finest remaining country estates of the early 20th century and is a cherished resource for the community valuing education, volunteerism, and diversity.

As a family-owned and operated business, Pastorino Hay is the only high-quality performance feed business on the peninsula. Opening its doors in 1993, Wayne and Dana saw the lack of quality hay for their own competitive equine athletes and started their own feed business to help support other performance horses and animals reach the top in the show arena.

Wunderlich Park is a hillside area of redwood forest, open meadows, and beautiful oaks and madrones. The park is largely open space, with a system of beautiful trails. Both horseback riding and hiking are available. This area was donated to the County by Martin Wunderlich. It contains what was once the Folger family ranch, and the estate stable and surrounding buildings have been restored to provide a historic treasure to the community. Take a self-guided tour »
There are picnic tables for drop-in picnicking but no day-use reservable facilities are available.
San Mateo County Sheriff ’s Mounted Search & Rescue (MSAR)
San Mateo County Sheriff ’s Mounted Search and Rescue unit is a team of mounted volunteers who aid in protecting the lives of citizens in San Mateo County on horseback.
What does a Mounted Search & Rescue (SAR) team do?
A mounted SAR team coordinates with other emergency organizations in search and rescue operations. Riders on horses can cover far more terrain, in a shorter period of time than a man on foot, and a horse with its highly developed senses of hearing, sight and smell, is often able to locate a victim before human search personnel are able to do so.
Who joins a Mounted Search & Rescue team?
Most mounted SAR groups are made up of civilian volunteers. Volunteers supply their own horses, equipment, and transportation. A great deal of time is also contributed toward continuous training for search and rescue operations.
When is the Mounted SAR division called out?
If a sheriff’s office is contacted about a missing person or is in the middle of a disaster situation, the sheriff will determine if circumstances warrant the help of mounted SAR. The mounted SAR team is prepared to be called out in all kinds of weather and at all times of the day or night.
Where does the San Mateo County Mounted Search and Rescue operate? Though the San Mateo County is our main staging area, SMCMSAR operations are not limited to the county region. The Mounted Search & Rescue team has been called to help other county emergency groups as far away as the Sierra Nevada mountains.
